Day of ending the war

What’s on today in Japan? – Day of ending the war

Today is the day of ending the war in Japan.
At noon on August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan to the people over the radio.
Every year, the government holds ceremony for the war soldiers on this day.
This year (2023) marks the 78th anniversary of the end of the war.

My grandmother saw 「mushroom cloud」in Nagasaki

Every year around this season, I think of my grandparents.
They both experienced the war, lived strongly after, taught me many things.
I already talked about my grandpa’s war experience in the video below.

But it was not only my grandpa – my grandmother was also a war survivor.

She was from Nagasaki. That explains a lot, right?

Well, she was evacuating beforehand, so she didn’t get hurt physically from the nuclear bomb on 9th of August 1945. However, she was staying close enough to see きのこ雲 (mushroom cloud) when it happened.

I don’t know in details – because, unlike my grandfather who was always talking about his war-experience, she had never talked about it.

She had never talked how the war was like for her or how she felt about it.

Now she’s gone, I would never know forever.

I should’ve asked her more about her experience – but at the same time I also think that maybe I did the right thing not to ask her. My thoughts are still dwelling on there.

For now, all I know is that I wish to live strong like my grandparents or people back then did.
