Restaurant with Many Orders by Miyazawa Kenji, in both Japanese and English – sleep story

This is Mitsuki, I’m posting story videos on Youtube. Here I’m introducing the story called, “Restaurant with many orders”(注文の多い料理店) written by 宮沢 賢治 (Miyazawa Kenji) in both English and Japanese.

The author Miyazawa Kenji was born in Iwate, 1896.
He wrote many stories and poetry; he is one of the most famous author in Japan.

I quoted his story from 「青空文庫」 which is a Japanese digital library, encompasses thousands of works including out-of-copyright books or works.

I wanted to introduce you this story, so I translated myself from Japanese to English in a honor of the author, Miyazawa Kenji.

二人の若わかい紳士しんしが、すっかりイギリスの兵隊へいたいのかたちをして、ぴかぴかする鉄砲てっぽうをかついで、白熊しろくまのような犬いぬを二匹にひきつれて、だいぶ山奥やまおくの、木この葉はのかさかさしたとこを、こんなことを言いいながら、あるいておりました。
Two young gentlemen, completely dressed as British soldiers, carrying glaring guns, taking two dogs that looked like polar bears, they were walking while talking like this in the deep mountains where the leaves were rustling…

「ぜんたい、ここらの山はけしからんね。鳥とりも獣けものも一匹いっぴきも居いやがらん。なんでも構かまわないから、早はやくタンタアーンと、やって見みたいもんだなあ。」

The mountains around here are no good. Not a single bird or beast stays here. I want to shoot something, as soon as possible. anything is fine.”

「鹿しかの黄きいろな横よこっ腹ぱらなんぞに、二三発にさんぱつお見舞みまいしたら、ずいぶん痛快つうかいだろうねえ。くるくるまわって、それからどたっと倒たおれるだろうねえ。」
It must be very exciting to shoot a deer in the yellow flank with a few bullets. It’d spin around and then fall down.

それはだいぶの山奥でした。案内あんないしてきた専門せんもんの鉄砲打てっぽううちも、ちょっとまごついて、どこかへ行いってしまったくらいの山奥でした。
It was deep in the mountains. so deep in the mountains that even the professional shooter who guided them was a bit confused and gone somewhere else.

それに、あんまり山が物凄ものすごいので、その白熊のような犬が、二疋ひきいっしょにめまいを起おこして、しばらくうなって、それから泡あわを吐はいて死しんでしまいました。
Moreover, the mountains were so overwhelming that the two dogs, which looked like polar bears, became dizzy together, groaned for a while, and then threw up the bubble and died.

「じつにぼくは、二千四百円にせんよんひゃくえんの損害そんがいだ」と一人ひとりの紳士しんしが、その犬の眼まぶたを、ちょっとかえしてみて言いました。
I lost 2,400 yen,” said one gentleman, turning the dog’s eyelids inside out.

「ぼくは二千八百円はっぴゃくえんの損害だ。」と、もひとりが、くやしそうに、あたまをまげて言いました。
“I lost 2,800 yen.” The other said, looking frustrated, tilting his head.

はじめの紳士は、すこし顔かおいろを悪わるくして、じっと、もひとりの紳士の、顔つきを見みながら云いいました。
The first gentleman stared at the other gentleman’s face with a slightly displeased look on his face, and said,

「ぼくはもう戻もどろうとおもう。」
「さあ、ぼくもちょうど寒さむくはなったし腹はらは空すいてきたし戻ろうとおもう。」
“I’m thinking of going back.”
“Well, it’s getting cold and I’m getting hungry, so I think I’m going back, too”

「そいじゃ、これで切きりあげよう。なあに戻りに、昨日きのうの宿屋やどやで、山鳥やまどりを拾円じゅうえんも買かって帰かえればいい。」
“Alright, let’s wrap this up. On the way back, we can buy a wild bird for about ten yen at the inn we stayed yesterday and go home.”

「兎うさぎもでていたねえ。そうすれば結局けっきょくおんなじこった。では帰かえろうじゃないか」
“They were also selling a rabbit. We can buy it, then we don’t have to hunt anymore.
Alright, let’s go back.”

ところがどうも困こまったことは、どっちへ行いけば戻れるのか、いっこうに見当けんとうがつかなくなっていました。
However, they had a trouble – they had no idea which way they should take – they don’t know how to get back.

風かぜがどうと吹ふいてきて、草くさはざわざわ、木この葉ははかさかさ、木きはごとんごとんと鳴なりました。
A gust of wind blew and the grass, the leaves and the trees rustled.

「どうも腹はらが空すいた。さっきから横よこっ腹ぱらが痛いたくてたまらないんだ。」
“I’m really hungry. I’ve been having pain in my side since a while ago.”

「ぼくもそうだ。もうあんまりあるきたくないな。」
“So am I. I don’t want to walk anymore.”

「あるきたくないよ。ああ困ったなあ、何なにかたべたいなあ。」
“I don’t want that either.
Oh boy , I want to eat something.”

「食たべたいもんだなあ」
“Yea, I agree”

二人の紳士は、ざわざわ鳴るすすきの中で、こんなことを云いいました。
In the rustling pampas grass, the two gentlemen were talking like this.

その時ときふとうしろを見ますと、立派りっぱな一軒いっけんの西洋造せいようづくりの家いえがありました。
And then, when they looked around, they saw a beautiful Western-style house.

そして玄関げんかんには

という札ふだがでていました。

And at the door, there’s a signboard saying,
“RESTAURANT western restaurant WILDCAT HOUSE Yamanekoken.”

「君きみ、ちょうどいい。ここはこれでなかなか開ひらけてるんだ。入はいろうじゃないか」
“Hey, this is perfect. It’s more civilized than I thought around here.
Let’s go in.”

「おや、こんなとこにおかしいね。しかしとにかく何か食事しょくじができるんだろう」
「もちろんできるさ。看板かんばんにそう書かいてあるじゃないか」
“Oh, this is strange. But I guess we can eat something anyway.”
“Of course we can. That’s what it says here”

「はいろうじゃないか。ぼくはもう何か喰たべたくて倒たおれそうなんだ。」
“Let’s go in. I feel like I’m going to collapse, I want to eat something.”

二人は玄関に立たちました。玄関は白しろい瀬戸せとの煉瓦れんがで組くんで、実じつに立派りっぱなもんです。
The two stood at the door. The entrance is splendid, made of white pottery bricks.

そして硝子がらすの開ひらき戸どがたって、そこに金文字きんもじでこう書いてありました。
「どなたもどうかお入はいりください。決けっしてご遠慮えんりょはありません」
And there was a door made of glass and gold letters were written on there, saying: “Everyone please come in. Please do not hesitate.”

二人ふたりはそこで、ひどくよろこんで言いました。
「こいつはどうだ、やっぱり世よの中なかはうまくできてるねえ、きょう一日いちにちなんぎしたけれど、こんどはこんないいこともある。このうちは料理店りょうりてんだけれどもただでご馳走ちそうするんだぜ。」
Two got excited, saying,
“After all, the world is amazing. well. It was a hard day today, but now something good happened like this. It’s a restaurant, but it’s free, I think.”

「どうもそうらしい。決してご遠慮はありませんというのはその意味いみだ。」
“Yea it seems that way. That’s what “please do not hesitate” means, I think.”

二人は戸とを押おして、なかへ入はいりました。
The two pushed the door and entered.

そこはすぐ廊下ろうかになっていました。
その硝子戸がらすどの裏側うらがわには、金文字でこうなっていました。
There was a corridor inside. On the back side of the glass door, the golden letters were written, saying:

「ことに肥ふとったお方かたや若わかいお方は、大歓迎だいかんげいいたします」
Fat people and young people are especially welcomed.

二人は大歓迎というので、もう大おおよろこびです。
Reading the letters, they are filled with joy.

「君、ぼくらは大歓迎にあたっているのだ。」
「ぼくらは両方兼りょうほうかねてるから」
“Hey, we are very welcomed” “yes, we are both young and fat”

ずんずん廊下を進すすんで行きますと、こんどは水みずいろのペンキ塗ぬりの扉とがありました。
Walking down the corridor, they found a door painted light blue.

「どうも変へんな家だ。どうしてこんなにたくさん戸とがあるのだろう。」
“It’s a very strange house. Why are there so many doors?”

「これはロシア式しきだ。寒さむいとこや山やまの中なかはみんなこうさ。」
This is Russian style. It’s always like this in a cold place or in the mountains.

そして二人はその扉をあけようとしますと、上うえに黄きいろな字じでこう書かいてありました。
And when they were about to open the door, they found the yellow letters above, saying ;

「当軒とうけんは注文ちゅうもんの多おおい料理店ですからどうかそこはご承知しょうちください」
“Please understand that we are a restaurant with many orders.”

「なかなかはやってるんだ。こんな山の中で。」
「それあそうだ。見たまえ、東京とうきょうの大きな料理屋りょうりやだって大通おおどおりにはすくないだろう」
“It seems pretty popular, In a mountain like this.”
“Yeah it’s understandable. there aren’t many big restaurants even in Tokyo on the main street.”

二人は云いながら、その扉をあけました。するとその裏側うらがわに、
「注文はずいぶん多いでしょうがどうか一々いちいちこらえて下ください。」
The two said as they opened the door. Then on the back of the door, it says, “There will be many orders, but please bear them one by one.”

「これはぜんたいどういうんだ。」ひとりの紳士は顔かおをしかめました。
“What is this all about?” A gentleman frowned.

「うん、これはきっと注文があまり多くて支度したくが手間取てまどるけれどもごめん下さいと斯こういうことだ。」
“Yeah, I think it means.. they are getting many orders from many guests. so .. it will take long time before serving us, and they want us to understand that.

「そうだろう。早くどこか室へやの中にはいりたいもんだな。」
「そしてテーブルに座すわりたいもんだな。」
I think you are right. I want to get into a room soon. ”
“Yeah, I want to sit down at the table.”

ところがどうもうるさいことは、また扉が一つありました。そしてそのわきに鏡かがみがかかって、その下には長ながい柄えのついたブラシが置おいてあったのです。
However, to their dismay, there was another door, and a mirror was hung beside it, and a brush with a long handle was placed underneath.

扉には赤あかい字じで、
「お客きゃくさまがた、ここで髪かみをきちんとして、それからはきものの泥どろを落おとしてください。」
と書いてありました。
On the door, red letters were written, saying;
“Dear our guests, please comb your hair and then wipe off the dirt from your shoes.”

「これはどうも尤もっともだ。僕ぼくもさっき玄関で、山のなかだとおもって見くびったんだよ」
“This is quite fair. I should’ve done it at the entrance, but it’s in the mountains, so..you know”

「作法さほうの厳きびしい家だ。きっとよほど偉えらい人ひとたちが、たびたび来くるんだ。」
“This seems a restaurant with strict manners.. I’m sure very important people are coming often. ”

そこで二人は、きれいに髪かみをけずって、靴くつの泥どろを落おとしました。
So they fixed their hair carefully, wiped off the dirt from their shoes.

そしたら、どうです。ブラシを板いたの上に置おくや否いなや、そいつがぼうっとかすんで無なくなって、風かぜがどうっと室の中なかに入ってきました。
Then what do you think happened?
The moment they put the brush down on the board, it faded and disappeared, and the wind gushed into the room.

二人はびっくりして、互たがいによりそって、扉をがたんと開あけて、次つぎの室へ入はいって行いきました。
They startled, snuggled closer. Then they slammed the door open and entered the next room.

早はやく何なにか暖あたたかいものでもたべて、元気げんきをつけて置おかないと、もう途方とほうもないことになってしまうと、二人とも思おもったのでした。
They needed to eat something warm to get their energies back, or else, they thought they would be in big trouble.

扉の内側うちがわに、また変へんなことが書いてありました。
There was something strange written on the inside of the door again.

「鉄砲てっぽうと弾丸だんがんをここへ置いてください。」
見るとすぐ横よこに黒くろい台だいがありました。
“Put your guns and bullets here.”
When they looked, there was a black table right next to it.

「なるほど、鉄砲を持ってものを食くうという法ほうはない。」
「いや、よほど偉いひとが始終来しゅうしきているんだ。」
“Indeed, it’s not polite to eat something while carrying a gun. ”
“Nah, I think a very important person is coming here, always”

二人は鉄砲をはずし、帯皮おびかわを解といて、それを台の上に置きました。
They removed the gun, unwrapped the belt, and placed it on the table.

また黒い扉がありました。
「どうか帽子と外套と靴をおとり下さい。」
Again, there was a black door. “Please take off your hat, overcoat and shoes.”

「どうだ、とるか。」
「仕方しかたない、とろう。たしかによっぽどえらいひとなんだ。奥おくに来きているのは」
“Well.. shall we take them off?”
“Yes, we have no choice, let’s take them off. There must be someone very important here.”

二人は帽子ぼうしとオーバーコートを釘くぎにかけ、靴をぬいでぺたぺたあるいて扉の中なかにはいりました。
They hung their hats and overcoats on the hook, took off their shoes, and entered the door barefoot.

扉の裏側には、
「ネクタイピン、カフスボタン、眼鏡めがね、財布さいふ、その他金物類たかなものるい、ことに尖とがったものは、みんなここに置いてください」
と書いてありました。
On the back of the door, letters were written, “Please leave your tie pins, cufflinks, eyeglasses, wallets, and other hardware, especially sharp objects, here.”

扉のすぐ横よこには黒塗くろぬりの立派りっぱな金庫きんこも、ちゃんと口くちを開けて置いてありました。鍵かぎまで添そえてあったのです。
Right next to the door, there was a fine black safe with its door open. There was eve a key for it.

「ははあ、何かの料理りょうりに電気でんきをつかうと見えるね。金気かなけのものはあぶない。ことに尖ったものはあぶないと斯こう云いうんだろう。」
“Hm, it looks like they use electricity to cook something. What they are saying is, metallic things, especially sharp objects are dangerous, right?”

「そうだろう。して見ると勘定かんじょうは帰かえりにここで払はらうのだろうか。」
「どうもそうらしい。」
「そうだ。きっと。」
“It would be so. Then this means.. we will pay the bill here when we go back, huh? ”
“It seems that way” “Yes. I’m sure.”

二人はめがねをはずしたり、カフスボタンをとったり、みんな金庫のなかに入れて、ぱちんと錠をかけました。
They took off their eyeglasses and cufflinks, putting everything in, and locked the safe.

すこし行いきますとまた扉とがあって、その前まえに硝子がらすの壺つぼが一つありました。
A little further on, there was another door, and in front of it there was a pot made of glass.

扉には斯う書いてありました。
「壺のなかのクリームを顔かおや手足てあしにすっかり塗ぬってください。」
みるとたしかに壺のなかのものは牛乳ぎゅうにゅうのクリームでした。
On the door, it says:
“Apply the cream in the pot all over your face, hands and feet.”
When they looked inside the pot, there was milk cream in it, indeed.

「クリームをぬれというのはどういうんだ。」
「これはね、外そとがひじょうに寒さむいだろう。室のなかがあんまり暖いとひびがきれるから、その予防よぼうなんだ。どうも奥には、よほどえらいひとがきている。こんなとこで、案外あんがいぼくらは、貴族きぞくとちかづきになるかも知しれないよ。」
“Why do we have to put the cream on? ”
“Well, It’s very cold outside, isn’t it?
Our skin will be cracked if it’s too warm inside, so this prevents that, I think.
There must be really important person in the back room.
We might get to meet a nobleman, in a place like this.”

二人は壺のクリームを、顔に塗ぬって手に塗ってそれから靴下くつしたをぬいで足に塗りました。
They applied the cream from the pot on their faces, on their hands, and then on their feet too, taking off their socks.

それでもまだ残のこっていましたから、それは二人ともめいめいこっそり顔へ塗るふりをしながら喰たべました。
There was still some left over, so they both secretly licked it, pretending to put it on their faces.

それから大急おおいそぎで扉をあけますと、その裏側には、
「クリームをよく塗りましたか、耳みみにもよく塗りましたか、」
と書いてあって、ちいさなクリームの壺がここにも置いてありました。
Then, when they opened the door in a hurry, on the back of the door, it says,”Did you apply the cream well, did you apply it well on your ears?” and there was a small cream pot left here as well.

「そうそう、ぼくは耳には塗らなかった。あぶなく耳にひびを切らすとこだった。ここの主人しゅじんはじつに用意周到よういしゅうとうだね。」
“Oh yeah, I didn’t put it on my ears. My ears might’ve cracked without it. The owner here is really meticulous.

「ああ、細こまかいとこまでよく気きがつくよ。ところでぼくは早く何か喰べたいんだが、どうも斯うどこまでも廊下じゃ仕方しかたないね。」
“Yea, he must be an attentive man.
By the way, I want to eat something now, but how come this corridor never ends?”

するとすぐその前まえに次つぎの戸がありました。
Then, soon the next door appeared in front of them.

「料理りょうりはもうすぐできます。
十五分じゅうごふんとお待またせはいたしません。
すぐたべられます。
早くあなたの頭あたまに瓶びんの中なかの香水こうすいをよく振ふりかけてください。」
The food will be ready soon. No need to wait for even another 15 minutes.
You’ll be able to eat soon.
Please spray the perfume in the bottle on your head quickly.

そして戸の前には金きんピカの香水の瓶が置いてありました。
二人はその香水を、頭へぱちゃぱちゃ振りかけました。
And in front of the door, there stood a bottle of shiny gold perfume. They sprayed the perfume on their heads.

ところがその香水は、どうも酢すのような匂においがするのでした。
However, that perfume smelled like vinegar.

「この香水はへんに酢くさい。どうしたんだろう。」
「まちがえたんだ。下女げじょが風邪かぜでも引ひいてまちがえて入いれたんだ。」
“This perfume smells like vinegar. How come?”
“Someone put it wrong. I think the maid must’ve got a cold or something and made a mistake.”

二人は扉をあけて中にはいりました。
扉の裏側には、大きな字じで斯う書いてありました。
The two opened the door and went inside. On the back of the door, the large letters were written, saying;

「いろいろ注文が多くてうるさかったでしょう。お気きの毒どくでした。
もうこれだけです。どうかからだ中じゅうに、壺の中の塩しおをたくさんよくもみ込こんでください。」
“So sorry we have bothered you with many orders. This is the last one.
Please rub the salt in the pot on your body thoroughly.”

なるほど立派りっぱな青あおい瀬戸せとの塩壺しおつぼは置いてありましたが、こんどというこんどは二人ともぎょっとしてお互たがいにクリームをたくさん塗った顔を見合みあわせました。
There was a fine blue pottery salt pot on the table, but this time- they startled, looked at each other’s face, which had a lot of cream on.

「どうもおかしいぜ。」
「ぼくもおかしいとおもう。」
「沢山たくさんの注文というのは、向むこうがこっちへ注文してるんだよ。」
“This is weird.”
“Yeah, I think so too.”
“By many orders… they mean, orders for us.”

「だからさ、西洋料理店せいようりょうりてんというのは、ぼくの考かんがえるところでは、西洋料理を、来きた人にたべさせるのではなくて、来た人ひとを西洋料理にして、食たべてやる家とこういうことなんだ。
これは、その、つ、つ、つ、つまり、ぼ、ぼ、ぼくらが……。」
“So, this western restaurant is not a restaurant where they serve western food, but it is where people are served as western dishes.
So, this means.. we .. we are about to…”

がたがたがたがた、ふるえだしてもうものが言えませんでした。
He started to tremble, unable to speak.

「その、ぼ、ぼくらが、……うわあ。」がたがたがたがたふるえだして、もうものが言えませんでした。
“That’s.. we.. we are…ahhh”
Shaken up, couldn’t say a word anymore.

「遁にげ……。」がたがたしながら一人の紳士はうしろの戸を押おそうとしましたが、どうです、戸はもう一分いちぶも動うごきませんでした。
“Let’s get out….” a gentleman tried to push the door behind him, but the door didn’t move an inch anymore.

奥の方にはまだ一枚扉いちまいとびらがあって、大きなかぎ穴あなが二つつき、銀ぎんいろのホークとナイフの形かたちが切きりだしてあって、
「いや、わざわざご苦労くろうです。大たいへん結構けっこうにできました。
さあさあおなかにおはいりください。」
と書いてありました。
There was still a door in the back, with two large keyholes, cut out in the shape of a silver folk and a knife, saying,
“Thank you for your hard work.
Well done, well done.
Please come inside my belly now.”

おまけにかぎ穴からはきょろきょろ二つの青あおい眼玉めだまがこっちをのぞいています。
What was worse, two blue eyeballs were peeking at them through the keyhole.

「うわあ。」がたがたがたがた。
「うわあ。」がたがたがたがた。

ふたりは泣なき出だしました。
They began to cry.

すると戸の中なかでは、こそこそこんなことを云っています。
Then, inside the door, someone’s whispering:

「だめだよ。もう気がついたよ。塩しおをもみこまないようだよ。」
“No, they noticed. They don’t rub in salt.”

「あたりまえさ。親分おやぶんの書きようがまずいんだ。あすこへ、いろいろ注文が多くてうるさかったでしょう、お気きの毒どくでしたなんて、間抜まぬけたことを書いたもんだ。」
“No wonder. The boss, he shouldn’t have written “So sorry we have bothered you with many orders.” It was such a dumb word.”

「どっちでもいいよ。どうせぼくらには、骨ほねも分わけて呉くれやしないんだ。」
“Never mind. He wouldn’t share even a bone with us anyways”

「それはそうだ。けれどももしここへあいつらがはいって来こなかったら、それはぼくらの責任せきにんだぜ。」
That’s true. But if they didn’t come in, it will be our fault.”

呼よぼうか、呼ぼう。おい、お客きゃくさん方がた、早はやくいらっしゃい。
Let’s call them out. Hey, dear guests, please come in now.

「いらっしゃい。いらっしゃい。お皿も洗ってありますし、菜っ葉ももうよく塩でもんで置きました。あとはあなたがたと、菜っ葉をうまくとりあわせて、まっ白なお皿にのせるだけです。はやくいらっしゃい。」

「へい、いらっしゃい、いらっしゃい。それともサラドはおきらいですか。そんならこれから火を起してフライにしてあげましょうか。とにかくはやくいらっしゃい。」

二人はあんまり心こころを痛いためたために、顔がまるでくしゃくしゃの紙屑かみくずのようになり、お互たがいにその顔かおを見合みあわせ、ぶるぶるふるえ、声こえもなく泣なきました。
The two gentlemen were so scared that their faces became like crumpled paper, and they looked at each other, trembling, crying silently.

中なかではふっふっとわらってまた叫さけんでいます。
At the inside, they are laughing and screaming again.

「いらっしゃい、いらっしゃい。そんなに泣いては折角せっかくのクリームが流ながれるじゃありませんか。へい、ただいま。じきもってまいります。さあ、早くいらっしゃい。」
“Come on, please come in!
Oh no don’t cry so much, the cream will be washed off.
Yes sir, in a moment.
Please, come on in! Hurry up!”

「早くいらっしゃい。親方おやかたがもうナフキンをかけて、ナイフをもって、舌したなめずりして、お客さま方を待まっていられます。」
“Come on now. Our boss is waiting for you guys, already putting his napkin on, knife in his hands, and licking his lips.”

二人は泣いて泣いて泣いて泣いて泣きました。
The two cried, cried, cried and cried..

そのときうしろからいきなり、
「わん、わん、ぐゎあ。」という声こえがして、あの白熊しろくまのような犬が二疋にひき、扉とをつきやぶって室(へや)の中に飛とび込こんできました。
Then suddenly from behind,
“Wow, wan, woah!”
The two dogs that looked like polar bears broke through the door and rushed into the room.

鍵穴かぎあなの眼玉めだまはたちまちなくなり、犬いぬどもはううとうなってしばらく室の中をくるくる廻まわっていましたが、また一声ひとこえ「わん。」と高たかく吠ほえて、いきなり次の扉に飛びつきました。
Soon the eyeballs in the keyhole were gone, and the dogs growled and circled around the room for a while, then suddenly barked again and jumped to the next door.

戸はがたりとひらき、犬どもは吸すい込まれるように飛とんで行きました。
The door slammed open and the dogs flew into the door.

その扉の向うのまっくらやみのなかで、
「にゃあお、くゎあ、ごろごろ。」という声こえがして、それからがさがさ鳴なりました。
In the darkness beyond that door, they heard roaring, howling and a rustle.

室はけむりのように消え、二人は寒さむさにぶるぶるふるえて、草くさの中に立たっていました。
The room vanished like a smoke and the next moment, the two were standing on the lawn, shivering with the cold.

見ると、上着うわぎや靴くつや財布さいふやネクタイピンは、あっちの枝えだにぶらさがったり、こっちの根ねもとにちらばったりしています。
The two Looked around. The jackets, shoes, purses, and tiepins were hanging from the branches over here or scattered at the roots over there.

風がどうと吹いてきて、草はざわざわ、木の葉はかさかさ、木はごとんごとんと鳴りました。
A gust of wind blew, the grass and the leaves rustled, the trees swaying.

犬がふうとうなって戻ってきました。
The dog came back groaning.

そしてうしろからは、
「旦那だんなあ、旦那あ、」と叫さけぶものがあります。
From the behind, someone calling out for them.
“sir, sir!”

二人は俄にわかに元気げんきがついて
「おおい、おおい、ここだぞ、早はやく来い。」と叫びました。
The two suddenly gained their energy back and shouted, “Hey, hey, we are here, come quickly!”

簔帽子(みのぼうし)をかぶった専門せんもんの猟師りょうしが、草をざわざわ分わけてやってきました。
A professional hunter wearing a hat came to them, pushing through the grass.

そこで二人はやっと安心あんしんしました。
And that’s when the two felt safe, finally.

そして猟師のもってきた団子だんごをたべ、途中とちゅうで十円じゅうえんだけ山鳥やまどりを買かって東京とうきょうに帰かえりました。
Then they ate the dumplings given by the hunter, and bought wild birds for ten yen on the way back to Tokyo.

しかし、さっき一ぺん紙かみくずのようになった二人の顔だけは、東京に帰っても、お湯ゆにはいっても、もうもとのとおりになおりませんでした。
However, their faces, which had became like a crumpled paper back then, never returned to the way they used to be, even after returning to Tokyo, or bathing in the hot water.
