Why “Kamiarizuki” (a month with gods) only at Izumo Taisha in October? Story – Sleep Story

Japanese Folklore

Hey!
I’m Mitsuki, I’m posting story videos on Youtube. Here I’m posting the script of my video below, “Kamiarizuki at Izumo Taisha“, the Japanese folklore told at Izumo Taisha shrine.

I think this would help if you are learning Japanese!

I hope you enjoy🌙

Why October is called “Kamiarizuki” (a month with gods) only at Izumo Taisha?

In Japan there are names for each months, and October is called kannazuki, a month without gods.

But at Izumo Taisha, October is called Kamiaeizuki, which means month with gods.

But why only at Izumo Taisha? October is called “a month with gods”?

By the way I can’t read「出雲いずも」..「出」is「でる」(exit), 「雲」is くも (cloud) right?

I know, 出雲 is very irregular, hard to read. Don’t worry, you wouldn’t use it that much! (unless you live in Shimane prefecture)

It is believed that all the gods all over Japan gather at Izumo taisha and have a meeting in October in the lunar calendar, every year.

All the gods go to the meeting held at izumo taisha, and that’s why in Izumo October is called kamiarizuki, month with gods, and elsewhere October is called kannnazuki, a month without gods.

〜以外の地域=「以外」other than, 地域=region/area
So 出雲大社以外の地域 means “areas other than Izumo Taisha“!

But Why? Why in Izumo taisha?
Well,
Izumo taisha shrine is often considered the oldest shrine in Japan, we don’t know exactly when it was built but it is said that it already existed in the early 700s, so.. it has a history of over 1300years .. approximately.

This region played a central role in Japan’s creation mythology ..

The main deity (kami) enshrined at Izumo Taisha is the creator of the land of Japan (and the ruler of Izumo), according to the creation myths.

Izumo is very important place.

and why do they have a meeting?

Because there are many gods in Japan. It is called “Yaoyorozu no Kami”.

Yaoyorozu no kami means countless, variety of gods live with us all the time, gods exists in everything, everywhere, for example god in a river, in a food, in a pen, in a mountain, in everything.

It is the very important thought, philosophy behind the Japanese culture, often depicted in anime and so on.

It is often said that there are seven gods in every each grain of rice.

That’s what I was taught as a child, so i had to eat them all up, with the gratitude..

So these Yaoyorozu no Kami, variety, countless gods gather in Kamiarizuki, October every year, and that’s where Izumo Taisha is.

Many people visit Izumo taisha in kamiariduki, where gods gather and have a meeting.

Maybe one day you can visit Izumo taisha, where the Japan’s creation mythology took place…..
