Rokurokubi Story in English, Japanese Famous Folklore, Urban Legend, Mythology

Once upon a time, there was a man who was traveling around.

One day, it was hot day, when he was resting in the room of a small hotel, someone called out for him. “Excuse me.”

The man answered, and the door was opened. There was a master of the hotel sitting down.

The master said to him,
Today our rooms are full. I’m so sorry but could you please share a room?

The man answered, okay.

The master partitioned a room into two small rooms, and left.
Then this beautiful woman came into his room.

The man was surprised, but he was so tired he fell a sleep.

「背を向ける」means “to turn your back”

It was past midnight, the man woke up with some noises.

ごそごそ is onomatopoeia often used when someone’s making a noise!

The sound was coming from that woman..so he looked that way, where she was.

It seemed that the womans body was lying down, quietly.
But something was wrong…

After a while, the man noticed what was strange: he couldn’t see her head… at where it should be.

Then he looked up… and he saw that her neck was stretching ..it looked like her head floating around.

The man was so surprised, that he couldn’t take his eyes off her stretching neck, and floating head.
That woman was Rokurokubi..!

Rokuro Kuvi, her neck stretched longer and her head went outside the room.
A man decided to follow Rokurokubi.

ニョロニョロ is another onomatopoeia often used when something long and thin moves with twisting its body!

Rokurokubi stopped at the river. Apparently She was drinking the water there.

The man was observing rokurokubi carefully…

The next moment, Rokurokubi turned around and looked straight into his eyes.

Oh she noticed me! That’s what he thought.. he ran fast and went back to the room and went back to his bed, pretending nothing ever happened. Then, he fell asleep..

The next morning, when he woke up, the woman talked to him.

Good morning. Did you sleep well?

The man answered cautiously, pretending he saw nothing.

Yes, I slept well.

Then The woman said, how strange. You were staring at me all night…

The man was surprised, and looked at her face.

Then, he realised something was wrong..

The man saw his body was still in his bed, lying down.
But how could he look at the woman’s face? If he was still lying down ..?

Then he realised, that his neck was stretching.. that he was also a Rokurokubi .. he just didn’t recognise it until now..

She was smiling quietly, staring at the man.

The man’s face turned pale, and he left the room in a hurry, and he never came back….
