Stories

Hey!
I’m telling you a story and today I’ll tell you a story of my grandpa.
He was a teenager when the world war 2 ended. He told me about the war all the time, so today I’ll talk about it.

WW2 War story – true story of my grandpa

From 1944 to 1945, the U.S. military dropped incendiary bombs in about 60 cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe.
387,000 deaths were confirmed, while death tolls unknown in 15 cities.

It was some months ago before ending the war. I was a teenager who was a student working at the factory manufacturing military aircrafts.

It was the day when the spring wind was blowing.

One day, when I woke up, I noticed something very wired ..

For some reason, I started to see the face of my father, who died when I was only five years old.

I don’t know why, but I could see his face all the time- even when I was taking a bath, or eating something.

He was staring at me in silence.

I felt so weird, so I told my mother about it.
“For some reason, I could see my father’s face, suddenly.”
Then my mother told me, “He is watching over you.”

And that day came, a week after I started seeing my father’s face.

I was at the factory as usual.
A loud air raid siren broke the silence, and suddenly the bombing began.

I went outside with four of my friends who were working with me and we ran away together for our lives.

We could see the river and the bridge ahead.

Four friends ran towards under the bridge.
For a moment I thought about running under the bridge with them, but I felt as if my father, who was always staring at me, had called me out, like,
“This way, this way.”

I ran towards the riverside, to the direction where my father was calling.
Then a big bomb fell nearby and I fainted.

I don’t know how much time has passed since then.

When I came back, I was in the river.
It looked like I had injured my leg – I was bleeding.

Looking around, the bridge where all of my friends were hiding, was destroyed without a trace.

And under that bridge—
I will never forget that scene.

I was so desperate that I got out of the river and started running towards the direction where my father’s shadow was calling.
Then, there was a person standing still in the middle of the road.

I pushed him a little, saying, “Sorry!”
Then something fell from his hand.

It was his arm.
He stood there dumbfounded, holding his torn off arm.

Seeing him just standing stunned, I started running again in the direction my father had called.

As I ran to the point where I couldn’t run anymore, I cringed.

As I started to feel pain at my leg, I thought I couldn’t go on anymore – but at that moment, another student found me and carried me to the place where I could have a rest.

And there, finally I could breathe.

After this bombing, I stopped seeing my father’s face completely.

I realized that from a week before the bombing, my father was there to save me.

All the friends who ran away with me had died.

I heard later that the man who stood stunned with his arm on the middle of the road had survived.

Even after the decades since that day, I still think about them- who I couldn’t help at that time.

My grandfather shared his experience with many people.
He past away last year.

He always said when he eat something, “Oh I’m so grateful, I couldn’t eat this much during the war.”

I look up on him so much, he was always so energetic, grateful and made me smile all the time.
